Val Saint-Lambert and Charles Graffart
The Cristallerie Val Saint Lambert, founded in 1826 within the former Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey in Seraing (Belgium), remains one of Europe's most renowned glassworks to this day. The company is synonymous with exceptional crystal quality and masterful cutting techniques. As early as the interwar period, the manufactory emerged as a key innovator in the Art Deco movement, and later in the fields of modern glass art and decorative arts.
Prominent designers associated with Val Saint Lambert include Léon Ledru (1855–1926), Victor Horta, Henry van de Velde, Joseph Simon (1874–1960), and Charles Graffart (1893–1967).
Graffart worked for the manufactory from 1942 to 1958 and is regarded as one of Val Saint Lambert’s most influential artistic directors. He left a lasting imprint on the company's modern aesthetic. His designs—including the "Muscadet" model—combine functional elegance with the highest standards of craftsmanship and masterful crystal cutting.
Today, his works are considered significant examples of post-war Belgian glass art and are highly prized by collectors of historical design objects.
