Paul Wunderlich – Rosenthal Artist Plate No. 19 (1982)
In 1982, Paul Wunderlich designed Artist Plate No. 19 for the Rosenthal Porcelain Manufactory. The plate was created as part of the Rosenthal Limited Art Series, a series in which renowned artists translated their visual language into porcelain.
With this inscription, Wunderlich adds a philosophical statement to his artistic design: "Peace is the father of all things – not war, Mr. Clausewitz!"
The collaboration between Paul Wunderlich and Rosenthal documents the exchange between contemporary art and applied design in the 1980s. The plate combines Wunderlich's characteristic visual language with Rosenthal's porcelain tradition and is part of a series of art and cultural historical interest. A collector's item for art and porcelain lovers.
About the artist:
Paul Wunderlich (1927–2010) was a German painter, draftsman, sculptor, and graphic artist. After studying at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts, he initially worked as an assistant and began an international artistic career in the 1960s.
His style is closely linked to Neo-Surrealism. In his paintings, prints, and sculptures, he frequently explored erotic and mythological themes. Reduced forms, symbolic figures, and an often mysterious visual language are characteristic.
In addition to his freelance work, Wunderlich also worked as a commissioned artist, designing, among other things, graphic series, book illustrations, and art objects for editions. His works are featured in numerous museums and private collections.
