Artist Plate No. 23 bears the unmistakable signature of Gilbert Portanier: bold colors, sweeping lines, and abstract forms that exude Mediterranean lightness. The motif appears spontaneous, almost improvised, yet unfolds a balanced harmony.
Here, Portanier applies his experience as a ceramicist and painter to the Rosenthal porcelain surface. This combination creates a work that combines vibrant, playful imagery with the fine precision of German porcelain art – Mediterranean vibrancy meets handcrafted elegance.
About the artist: Gilbert Portanier (1926–2023)
Born in Cannes, the award-winning French ceramicist's works are part of the collections of major museums. After studying architecture and art, he devoted himself entirely to ceramics and painting. In Vallauris, where he met artists such as Picasso and Fernand Léger, he developed a distinctive visual language: colorful, abstract, full of lightness, humor, and poetic playfulness. With this characteristic expressiveness, Portanier is one of the most influential designers of French post-war modernism.
