The Origin: Philip Rosenthal's Vision
ART FLAGEY offers a range of Rosenthal artist plates, the idea for which dates back to the introduction of the Rosenthal studio-line in 1961.
Philip Rosenthal pursued a clear philosophy: "Living with art."
His goal was to bring contemporary art from museums directly into people's everyday lives. The plate became the round canvas for the most important creative minds of his time.
From the late 1960s onward, Rosenthal succeeded in attracting over 150 international stars of the art world to the medium of porcelain: Artists like Jean Cocteau, Paul Wunderlich, Max Bill, Günter Grass, Salvador Dalì, Salomé, Jörg Immendorff, Ernst Fuchs, Marcello Morandini, and others.
From Series to Limited Edition Art Object
A crucial milestone in the development was the introduction of limited edition art series. Starting in 1971, the first annual plates appeared in limited editions, often hand-signed and numbered.
This transformed the artist plate from merely decorative wall art into a collector's item and investment with lasting value.
Each Rosenthal porcelain plate bears the individual signature of its artist, revealing the diverse ways in which artistic concepts can be translated onto the smooth surface of porcelain – from poetic lines to expressive colors.
These artist-designed plates are an expression of artistic diversity and, at the same time, a reflection of the close connection between traditional craftsmanship, modern art and design in the 20th century.
