Pair of French Art Déco wall sconces designed by Degué.
This rare pair of wall sconces comes from the workshop of the famous French glassworks Degué, which was one of the leading manufacturers of Art Deco glass in the 1920s and 1930s.
The sconces combine satin-finished pressed glass with stylized rose and blossom reliefs and a geometrically structured metal frame. The sockets feature a stepped, V-shaped profile with clean edges and symmetrical lines. Overall, a contrast emerges between the soft, decorative glass surface and the more austere form of the metal frame. The combination of sculpted glass and the clearly structured metal housing is characteristic of French Art Deco of the late 1920s and early 1930s.
- Floral nature motifs (here: stylized roses) refer to decorative Art Nouveau, but are translated into strictly geometric forms.
- The clean lines and symmetry of the metal frame reflect the architectural spirit of the 1930s.
- The high-quality material combination (frosted glass and silver bronze) underscores the luxurious appeal of the era.
Manufacturer – Degué (David Gueron)
The Degué brand originates from the entrepreneur and designer David Guéron (1892–1950), a glassmaker originally from Turkey. Guéron initially founded the "Cristalleries de Compiègne" and, starting in the mid-1920s, established the "Degué" brand in Paris, composed of the initial letters of his name, D (phonetically = De) and G (phonetically = Gue). Under this name, Guéron presented high-quality glass objects – vases, bowls, lamps, and wall appliqués – that impressed with both their elaborate pressing and overlay techniques and their artistic design.
Guéron's designs placed him in direct competition with Établissements Schneider ("Le Verre Français") and René Lalique. Despite legal disputes with Schneider, Degué successfully asserted itself on the market and participated in the legendary Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925, which gave "Art Deco" its name.
Degué lamps are considered representative examples of French Art Deco: They demonstrate the period's typical balance between decorative, floral elements and functional design with clear, geometric structures.
Degué lamps are among the most sought-after pieces of Art Deco today and are valued as collector's items as well as style-defining furnishing elements.
