About the manufacturer WMF
Historical Development:
The history of the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) began in 1880 following the merger of two Württemberg-based factories: the works of Daniel Straub (Straub & Sohn) in Geislingen an der Steige and those of Alfred Ritter (A. Ritter & Co.) in Esslingen.
WMF rapidly evolved into one of Europe's leading manufacturers of metalware and silverware. By around 1900, WMF had become synonymous with high-quality silver-plated decorative and utilitarian objects—items that were highly prized in both the German and international markets. The "WMFB" brand was specifically used to mark export goods destined for the English market.
WMF in the Art Nouveau Era:
During the Art Nouveau period, WMF set new standards through innovative design, the application of modern electroplating techniques, and collaborations with artists and designers. The Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik was a leader in European silver design, shaping the aesthetic of an entire era.
WMF’s silver-plated products dating from the period between 1900 and 1910 serve as exemplary examples of the decorative arts of that time and remain highly sought after by antique collectors.
