Art Déco Liqueur Carafe, Karel Palda, Bohemia
About the manufacturer Palda, Karel
Palda glass workshop 1920 - 1945
The Bohemian glass designer and manufacturer Karel Palda founded his own glass workshop in the 1920s in Haida (today Nový Bor, Czech Republic). In a region with centuries-old glassmaking traditions, he developed a manufactory that became renowned for its innovative designs in the Art Déco style.
The Karel Palda glass workshop specialized in finely refined Bohemian glass – including vases, bowls, boxes, flacons, carafes, and complete toilet and bar sets. Typical of Palda’s creations are clear geometric shapes, stylized patterns, and bold contrasts in colors such as black, gold, or red. Many objects were further enhanced with elaborate cutting, engraving, and enamel painting, giving them their unique elegance.
The workshop employed several dozen workers at times and collaborated closely with home-based craftsmen as well as the renowned Glass School in Bor/Haida. Designs by artists such as Alexander Pfohl Jr. shaped the artistic profile of production. By the 1930s, Karel Palda glass was exported across Europe and overseas – including to Vienna, London, Milan, and Barcelona.
Until the end of World War II, the glass manufactory remained a major producer of luxury glassware. After 1945, it merged with the Leopold Palda company and was relocated to Steinschönau (Kamenický Šenov).
