Art Déco Table Lamp, Charles SCHNEIDER
About the manufacturer Schneider, Charles
Glass artist in Épinay-sur-Seine
Charles Schneider (1881 - 1953) was a leading French glass artist and entrepreneur of the Art Deco period.
Together with his brother Ernest Schneider, he initially worked for Daum Frères in Nancy before founding their own glassworks in Épinay-sur-Seine near Paris in 1913.
Their creations under the names Schneider and Le Verre Français gained international fame after 1923. By 1926, their workshop was the largest glass manufacturer in France, with around 500 employees.
Schneider’s work combines artisanal quality with the aesthetics of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. His brightly colored vases and lamps remain highly sought-after today.
The Wall Street Crash of 1929 marked the decline of the company. Production ceased in 1932, and bankruptcy followed in 1938.
Since the 1980s, Schneider glass has been rediscovered and is now considered on par with works by Émile Gallé and Daum.
