Robert Giron – Couple on a Stroll, 1924

A Cubist-Influenced Painting of Belgian Modernism

This rare painting by the Belgian artist Robert Giron (1897–1967), dating from 1924, is a striking example of Belgian Modernism of the 1920s. The work depicts a couple on a summer stroll, accompanied by two shadowy figures in the background.

Giron's painting combines figurative representation with a clearly structured, Cubist-influenced formal language. The figures are divided into colored, planar segments, creating a dynamic composition that conveys movement and rhythm.

Despite the geometric reduction, the painting retains a palpable warmth and intimacy. The harmonious color composition and the stylized depiction of the figures lend the scene an almost dance-like lightness.

This work exemplifies the transition from traditional figuration to modern abstraction in the 1920s and is thus one of the characteristic examples of the Belgian avant-garde of this period.

About the artist – Robert Giron (1897–1967)

The Belgian painter Robert Giron was not only a significant representative of modern Belgian art, but also a central figure in 20th-century European art.

He studied at the Académie de Bruxelles and the Académie Libre L’Essor / Labor. His artistic circle included important figures of Belgian modernism such as Paul Delvaux, René Magritte, and Jean Milo.

In 1932, Giron largely abandoned his active artistic practice to take over the management of the painting exhibitions at the newly opened Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Under his curatorial direction, Brussels developed into a major international center for modern art.

Until his death in 1967, Giron organized numerous important exhibitions. These included a retrospective of Paul Delvaux in 1957 and an exhibition of Mark Rothko in 1962. In doing so, he made a crucial contribution to the presentation and promotion of international contemporary art in Belgium.
