About the Designer: Charles Catteau (1880–1966)
Charles Catteau was a renowned French ceramic artist of the early 20th century, celebrated for his innovative Art Deco creations. Born in 1880 in Douai, he studied at the prestigious École Nationale de Céramique de Sèvres and trained at the Sèvres porcelain manufactory. In 1904, he joined the Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Nymphenburg in Germany.
In 1906, Catteau moved to the Belgian company Boch Frères Keramis in La Louvière. By 1907, he became head of the decor department and design workshop, a position he held until retirement. There, he created hundreds of ceramic models featuring bold shapes, glazes, and decorative motifs.
From the 1920s onward, his work embraced colorful patterns inspired by Japanese and African art as well as flora and fauna. His signature geometric designs and vibrant enamel finishes are hallmarks of Art Deco ceramic art.
Catteau also designed glassware for Val-Saint-Lambert and was awarded a gold medal at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
