Description

Magnificent still life by Belgian artist Fernand Toussaint.

Toussaint's still life is dominated by an opulent bouquet of colorful ranunculus in a heavy copper jug—in warm reds, vibrant yellows, pinks, and whites. The flowers are placed on a dark, glossy tabletop, next to a greenish-glazed ceramic bowl filled with fruit. In the background, a richly patterned tapestry is suggested, softly framing the composition.

The painting is a beautiful example of Toussaint's virtuoso handling of light, texture and color, which is evident in the painterly depth and the finely tuned play of colors.

The painting is mounted in a finely ornamented, original gilded frame.

About the artist:

Fernand Toussaint (March 17, 1873 - Brussels - July 31, 1956)

Fernand Toussaint was an important Belgian painter of the Belle Époque and the early 20th century. He began studying at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels at the age of fifteen and became a student of the renowned French painter Jean-François Portaels. At the age of eighteen, he continued his studies in Paris with the renowned Belgian portraitist Alfred Stevens.

Toussaint specialized in portraits, still lifes, and floral compositions, which impress with their elegant color scheme, atmospheric depth, and decorative composition. He is particularly known for his subtle portraits of women and his vibrant floral still lifes, which made him a sought-after artist among Belgian middle-class society.

His works were exhibited in Paris, Brussels, Antwerp, and London and received numerous awards. Toussaint was a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.

The artist is one of the most important Belgian representatives of the period between Impressionism and Art Nouveau.

Today his paintings can be found in numerous private collections and museums.
