Wolfgang Koch – Melancholic Scene at the Table, 1979
This expressive painting by Berlin-based painter Wolfgang Koch depicts a woman with reddish-brown hair sitting alone at a table. In front of her: a glass of red wine, a burning candle in a bottle, and an ashtray – everyday objects that create a dense emotional tension.
The scene is painted in muted colors, with a strong play of light and shadow. The reduced, almost austere composition unfolds a quiet intensity – a typical example of Koch's magical realism. Offered by ART FLAGEY Kunsthandel Berlin.
About the artist: Wolfgang Koch (1933–2007)
After training as a painter and decorator, and graduating as a building painter, Wolfgang Koch found his way to free art. His work oscillates between realistic precision and emotional condensation.
In the 1970s and 1980s, he was a fixture in the Berlin art scene. His themes: human loneliness, the tension between man and the city, and psychological depth in everyday scenes. Koch's paintings are calm yet dramatic—still yet charged.
