Description

Art Nouveau Centerpiece with Putti - Majolika Manufaktur Karlsruhe

A festoon-decorated centerpiece made by the Majolika Manufaktur Karlsruhe, colorfully painted and colorlessly glazed, beautifully decorated with two putti as "grape carriers." The design, dating from 1910, was created by Wilhelm Süs, the manufactory's first artistic director at the time.

The jardinière is marked on the base with the blue glaze stamp, along with the decoration and model number.

About the manufacturer:

Majolika Manufaktur Karlruhe

The internationally recognized Majolika Keramik Manufaktur Karlsruhe was founded in 1901 by Grand Duke Friedrich I. The artistic initiators were Hans Thoma, graphic artist and painter, and Wilhelm Süs (1861 Düsseldorf - 1933 Mannheim).

In its history, the "majolica" has had a very glittering time. Their distinctive products were in demand and appreciated worldwide soon after their founding. At the 1904 World Fair in St. Louis (USA), the majolica was awarded a gold medal for her work.

Hans Thoma's trademark, designed in 1901, had essentially remained unchanged. It shows the Baden coat of arms with the Grand Duke's crown and a double "M" for majolica manufacture.

The only ceramics factory in Germany, which had survived all crises for more than 120 years, had to close in May 2024. With the closure of Majolika, a piece of Karlsruhe's cultural history comes to an end.
