Colorful painting by Russian artist Igor Tcholaria.
This colorful painting by the Georgian-Russian artist Igor Tcholaria depicts an expressive scene in the style of modern Figurative Expressionism. It centers on imaginatively dressed circus figures—harlequins and clowns—staged in intense shades of blue, red, and yellow. The composition thrives on its dynamic texture, dense overlay of forms, and a mysteriously ironic expression. The work is a typical example of Tcholaria's artistic style, which combines classical motifs with avant-garde elements. The painting reflects the painter's preference for circus scenes. According to Tcholaria's own words (https://tcholaria-gallery.com/about/) "... the biggest event of the year (during his childhood) was when the Moscow Circus came to town. The animals, clowns in their vibrant costumes, and agile acrobats fired my imagination and became favorite characters of many of my paintings."

Igor Tcholaria (*11 September 1959 Georgia)
Igor Tcholaria is an internationally acclaimed painter with Georgian-Russian roots. After receiving classical training at the Sukhumi Art Academy in 1976 and later at the renowned Repin Institute in Saint Petersburg, Tcholaria developed his distinctive style, which lies somewhere between classical and avant-garde.
With the onset of Gorbachev's perestroika, Tcholaria attracted the attention of European galleries and collectors. Exhibitions worldwide and close collaborations with art galleries in Italy, Belgium, England, and the Netherlands followed.
His works combine figurative painting with expressive color and a surreal flair. Common motifs include harlequins, acrobats, circus figures, and poetically exaggerated everyday scenes. Inspired by artists such as Picasso and Chagall, Tcholaria achieves a vibrant synthesis of Russian artistic tradition and Western modernism.
Igor Tcholaria lives and works in St. Petersburg and Belgium. He is a member of the Union of Artists of Russia and an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts.
