Painter and draftsman, Antoine Carte is also a creator of tapestry, stained glass and murals. Expressionist and symbolist, he has a predilection for popular and genre scenes, religious compositions, landscapes, figures. He paints with elegant and powerful lines but also in a delicate intimism that already announces animism. Anto Map does not belong to any school. It remains impervious to the new artistic trends of its time, such as cubism or surrealism. The human figure is central in the work of Anto Carte. At the beginning of his career, influenced by symbolism, he represents mythological and imaginary characters. Then, his painted work manifests some favorite themes, like the "Brueghel" characters that are blind and musicians. The world of work inspires him a lot especially that of the coal mines of his native Borinage, and that of the peasants. Deeply religious, he paints many religious subjects.
