Growing up in the artistic milieu, Hubert Malfait meets B. Van den Abeele, V. de Saedeleer and E. Claus. From 1916 he studied at the Art Academy of Ghent under J. Delvin and Georges Minne.

His early works are influenced by Impressionism, the light and the colors of Emile Claus. Later his color palette darkens. His work is predominantly expressionist.

From 1923 his works tend towards Cubist Expressionism. In 1924 he is in contact with G. De Smet, F. Van den Berghe et C. Permeke. Inspired by the area around Astene, the valley of the Lys and the surrounding fields, farmers and field workers are among his favorite subjects.

In his last creative period from 1955 to 1968, his style became increasingly abstract, larger and darker. In 1968 retrospective of his work in the Museum of Fine Arts of Ostend.
